Anna (Ellen Diedrich), a beautiful girl from a poor background, is offered a well-paid position as a lady's companion in London. Handsome Georg (Lauritz Olsen) has been Anna's friend since childhood, and they are now informally betrothed. The sceptical Georg suspects that the job offer is too good to be true, but Anna dismisses his scepticism and she reports to the London address. Fabian is busy: he is going on a picnic with his girlfriend. Unfortunately, he is delayed by a series of absurd accidents on the way to the train station.

By a nefarious trick, the villain gains access to his old friends’ villa and pretends to reconcile with them, while his hooded, cloaked and masked cronies prepare to kidnap the man as soon as he steps out the door.

The film is loosely based on Alexandre Dumas’ play about the celebrated actor Kean, who moves effortlessly through all walks of life in 1830s London. One evening he’s in the company of counts and princes, and the next he’s enjoying the company of poor artists at the city’s pubs. A series of infatuations drive him into a complicated love drama.

One day, Fabian discovers a large and hideous rat in his house. While it initially scares him out of his wits, he soon does everything in his power to capture the intruder. Unfortunately, he is so eager that the rat hunt ends up costing him dearly.

When his mother-in-law announces her arrival, Fabian gets busy running away. He crawls up through the chimney, much to the surprise of the chimney sweeper, and then continues his hasty and destructive journey through the city. He ends up having a whole entourage of aggrieved people home with him in the living room, where a new letter from the mother-in-law is awaiting him.

Master Spag rejoices when he is offered the position of house teacher for the baroness' two sons. However, he is hardly inside the door before the naughty boys start running circles around him.
