We are in 1987, in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. A military border post on the Yugoslav-Albanian border is thrown into disarray when its commander discovers he has syphilis, creating chaos in his bid to avoid his wife and admitting his infidelity. The ordinary soldiers serving their compulsory military service there must cope with problems of their own.

Josef Barta's birth is accompanied by a prophecy: that he will die at the age of 29, and that is his exact age when his wife and son leave him and his world falls apart. While his odd friendship with unbridled Gabriel gives Josef a new lease on life, it is also the source of great problems. It seems that his new found love helps him discover the meaning of life, but a dramatic sequence of events subjects Josef to trials that help him change himself and his fate. (film.com)
