Enrico Corsi, in Rome, reflects on his relationship with his younger brother Lorenzo, following Lorenzo's recent passing from a long and debilitating illness at the age of twenty-seven in Florence.

Son Ferdinando buys out his other relatives in order to gain full control over the dead man's property. But Ferdinando's country-bumpkin nephew Amerigo holds out.
