Varvara Mavromati

A young man who has left university in order to perform folk shadow theater is having a strained relationship with his wife who is sick with cancer. Together they reach a small village where an old woman is seeing visions about the remains of a martyr saint and his miraculous icon.

A snapshot of medieval Macedonia during the 14th century and of the civil war that broke out in the Byzantine empire. A young man from the village Doxobus lives through these troubled years, eventually leaving the monastery to become one of the heroes of the rebellion and to return to his village as its new master.
