Greek Sea, World War II. An Italian ship leaves a handful of soldiers in a little island; their mission is to spot enemy ships and to hold the island in case of attack. A young man just released from the army is making great dreams for his life. Finally he gets a job in a butcher's shop and gains the confidence of the owner. After the butcher's death he falls in love with his daughter but also has an affair with the widow and cannot decide between them.

Eurydice is a singer in a group that plays in country fairs. She gets convinced by a rich farmer to follow him to Athens, where he promises her that he will make her a famous singer. Things do not turn out as promised, and Eurydice returns to the band, which is very successful now, due to Orpheus, a mute clarinet player, who has joined them. The farmer comes to reclaim her by force and Eurydice gets killed in a car accident. Orpheus tries to give her life with his clarinet.

Anna, the daughter of a poor family, marries Dimitris, the oldest son of Antonis Razis, notable of the village, while her brother is in jail for murder. Everything goes well until Kostas, second son of Razis that has spent his own share of the fortune and is in debt, arrives to the village with Tzeni, a folk singer.
