One of the twin sons of a family gets stolen during a train journey, after which the child grows up in another family as the son of a childless couple, as Vetrivel aka Vel (Surya). Meanwhile the other kid grows up to be a private detective, Vasudevan (Surya). Vasudevan's girlfriend Swathi (Asin) runs across Vel & informs Vasudevan about him. After Vel & Vasudevan realize that they are brothers, they decide to switch places, & Vasudevan takes on Vel's arch rival Sakkara Pandi (Kalabhavan Mani).

Police Commissioner Mohamed Maideen Khan (Napoleon) is on the task of cleaning up Chennai mafia, of which the two prominent & warring gangs are Alibhai's (Prakash Raj), of which Tamizh (Vijay), a goon who does anything for money, is a part of & Narasimhan's. Tamizh's lover Shruthi (Asin), an aerobics instructor, is accosted by corrupt cop Govindan (Mukesh Tiwari), who is on Alibhai's payroll, & asked to be his mistress failing which, he would defame her family. Tamizh sets out to protect her.

Surya Narayana Varma (Dilip) falls in love with Ashwathy (Kavya Madhavan) of the Karimparackal family but faces stiff opposition from her family. He ends up killing a member of the Karimparackal family in a fight with them. After getting released from a 5 year sentence, Surya is taken by his parents to Chennai & enrolled in Law College Chennai. There, he tries to abstain from trouble with his friend Komalan (Harisree Asokan) watching over him. But, soon he is forced to reveal his fierce self.

Upon hearing the melodic tones of Kutty (Vijay), an aspiring singer looking for a career breakthrough, Rukmini (Simran) becomes a big fan even though she's never laid eyes on him - and never will, after he causes her to lose her sight. To make up for it, Kutty dedicates himself to her care, going so far as to donate a kidney to raise money for an operation to restore Rukmini's vision. But a fateful train station encounter changes everything.

Petty thieves Krish (Karthik Kumar) & Veni (Shikha) set out to retrieve some priceless diamonds hidden 20 years ago by a rich businessman in one of a set of four chairs. Giving them tough competition in the matter is an evil trio lead by thug Veerappan (Anand Raj), who had killed the businessman & his wife 20 years ago to get the diamonds. Both parties travel from city to city under different disguises looking for the chairs, while being chased around by imbecile cop Mathrubhootham (Jayaram).

Sambandham (Kamal Haasan), a typical bejewelled, garish looking stunt master in film and a confirmed bachelor, tries to help his brother Anand (Abbas) who is caught in the quagmire of matrimony. Anand had fallen in love, eloped, and gotten married. His wife Malathi (Sneha) harasses her husband to no end on the advice of her friend, Janaki (Simran Bagga), a sworn spinster. Later, Kamal falls in love with Simran and takes steps to marry her.

After having spent his entire life in Bombay's Dharavi slums, Digamber feels it is time that he takes steps to improve his lifestyle. He, along with two other slum-dwellers, plot to kidnap the only son (Shravan) of a wealthy businessman, Kishore Mehta. Things do not go as planned as one of their partners gets hospitalized when he gets a reaction from locally brewed alcohol.
