Famous composer Martin meets concertmaster Barbara at one of his performances, and the two fall in love. After divorcing their spouses, Martin and Barbara marry and begin a happy life together. The film takes place in a maternity ward within twenty-four hours. Cecilia Ellius is brought into the emergency ward after she starts haemorrhaging only three months into her pregnancy. Stina is strong and healthy but her baby is overdue, while Hjördis is expecting an illegitimate child and has attempted an abortion.

Viveka and Sune meet in the cathedral of Uppsala and bond over doubts about their faith and the goodness of the world. Choosing to retreat from society, the couple leave themselves no outlet for these doubts, which eventually consume them. (SM)
