The Shinsengumi was a special police force organized in 1864 to protect the shogun during the period of civil unrest following the arrival of the black ships. Kondo Isami, the "Devil" commander of the Shinsengumi was a master swordsman who devoted his life to protecting the shogun and fighting on the side of the Tokugawa.
