This absolutely splendid little 9-minute film captures to perfection the early virtues of the National Film Board of Canada's "B-Unit" - a group of producers, directors, and other artists who, in the interval between John Grierson and the arrival of full-fledged cinema-verite, collaborated on many documentaries that arguably form the pinnacle of the NFB's achievement. The photography and editing here are terrific, and many of the scenes look like predictors of Guy Maddin's "My Winnipeg". (KG)

Headline Hunters is an 11-minute 1945 Canadian documentary film, part of the wartime Canada Carries On series, produced by Alan Field. The short film was made by the National Film Board of Canada. The film was a tribute to Canadian war correspondents who reported from the front lines in the Second World War.

This short film serves as a cautionary tale to farmers who recklessly cut down trees on their land. When prairie farmers engaged in this practice to facilitate plowing, they discovered that the trees had served as windbreaks protecting top soil from erosion. The Dominion Department of Agriculture’s experimental station at Indian Head, Saskatchewan, cultivated acres of young trees for distribution to farmers.
