Jeevan Mashai is the last in the line of a family of Ayurvedic physicians who run the 'Arogya Niketan' treatment center in the village. The gifted Jeevan, who does his treatment through 'Nadi pariksha' or pulse examination, can feel the pulse of people & diagnose their malady, its severity & its fatality. Simultaneously the subject of respect & anger, Mashai faces a skeptic in the form of allopathic doctor Pradyut (Vijayaraghavan) who is convinced that Mashai is a quack & is manipulating people.

This movie revolves around the lives of two brothers, Kishan (Amol Palekar) and Shambhu (Rajesh Khanna). Kishan is married to Shanti (Raakhee), but both are unable to have children. When Tulsi (Rekha) and her blind mother come to live in the same village, Shambhu falls in love with her.
