Karthiyayini (Sharbani Mukherji), born into an aristocratic Hindu Menon family, gets attracted to Maammootty (Prakash Bare), a Muslim merchant & elopes with him. Although she changes her faith to Islam & her name to Suhara, the discovery of an idol in her house premises rekindles her Hindu roots, & she sets up a temple in her house courtyard. This act angers the local Hindu & Muslim communities, resulting in severe repercussions for Karthiyayini & her husband.

Kochubaby (Sreenivasan), a blind candlemaker, falls in love with and marries Mary (Sharbani Mukherji), his blind coworker, but Mary dies in an accident soon after giving birth to a girl child. Kochubaby brings up the child, Lillykutty, alone, but in her teens, she (Shafna) too is diagnosed with a degenerative eye disease, & slated to lose her eyesight soon. Saddened, Kochubaby tries to mentally prepare his daughter for the impending life of darkness.

Vidya lives a middle-class lifestyle in a virtually lawless town called Amarpur, India, along with her widower and disabled dad, Shambhu; married brother, Shiva and his wife, Lata; and her paternal grandma.
