Henry Groper a struggling Optician, gets married to Eleanor to her Father's dismay. But on their wedding day, Henry is told he has 30 days to make a go of his business or else his Father In-law will set him up in a Rag and bone junk trade to support his daughter. With an early appearance of Danny Kaye as one of Henry Gropers patients.

During a raid on a speakeasy, a cop finds himself attracted to a pretty female employee. Instead of arresting her and taking her to jail, he not only helps her escape but takes her out to dinner. Eventually they marry, but it's not long before the new bride starts to yearn for the excitement of her life back at the speakeasy. Against her husband's wishes, she goes back there and is noticed by the joint's owner, who offers her a job.

Si Jenks and Bob Carney go to one of those colleges where there are no classes -- although there is one befuddled, elderly professor who shows up for thirty seconds -- but there is lots of dancing, ukulele-playing, upper class men tormenting freshmen, and competition over Sally Starr, who seems to be the only student less than 30 years old.

Herman and Pat, college youths, are employed after hours in a food market but are fired by the owner. The latter has an old maid sister who has been trying to marry her brother's business rival for years, while Herman is in love with the market owner's daughter, but forbidden to see her. They devise a grandiose plan to solve both problems.

Druggist George Haggerty's wife is about to give birth. Because all his customers pay on credit, he has no money, and the phone company is taking out the pay phone. Pal Bert Lahr agrees to get the news on his phone, and forward it to Haggerty. To top it off, Haggerty is getting a business loan, and doesn't want anyone to know about it, so Lahr agrees to not mention it when anyone is about. Naturally, Lahr's fiancee shows up when Lahr gets the call, and thinks it's his child.

Pat wants to marry Nancy, but her mother refuses. Pat gets Herman to pose as Nancy's new suitor, expecting that he will be refused in favor of Pat. But mother tricks them by welcoming Herman into the family, and Pat has to do some quick thinking to get Herman off the hook.

Newlywed Pat gets a raise from his boss. Herman, seeing how simple it is, tells his boss of his own marriage plans. All goes well until both bosses drop in on both young men to "meet the bride." Pat's bride finds herself playing both wives.

Pals Herman and Pat, with diamond rings in hand, are all set to make marriage proposals. Pat is bashful, however, so Herman broaches the subject to Pat's girl. The girl's parents think Herman is the suitor, and invite him to dinner. Meanwhile, Herman's own prospective in-laws are hosting a dinner, too, so Herman and Pat dash from one dining room to the other, trying to straighten things out.
