M. Madhava Menon (Thilakan), a powerful politico, destroys the life & family of a young man, Johnson (Kamal Hassan), for having a love affair with his daughter Renu (Urmila Matondkar). Years later, Johnson returns to take revenge on Madhava Menon, now the Chief Minister of Kerala. Using brains rather than brawns, he enlists the help of an apery artist Jayaram (Jayaram), & they start to intercept the CM's radio & TV broadcasts to substitute their own versions, to destroy the CM's political image.

Urumees (Mammootty), with the strength of 6 people but with the brain of a 6 year old, is a source of constant sorrow for his aging mother Mariamma (Showkar Janaki) & Urumees's antics forces them to move constantly. On one such occasion they come to the Green Valley tea estate of Nilgiri Hills to work, where Urumees rubs the brutal manager of the estate, Sivan (Raghuvaran), the wrong way. Because of the workers' support for Urumees, Sivan plays his cards so as to turn the workers against him.
