A widowed landlord, Thakur (D.K. Sapru), has a son Ramesh, daughter Roopa & an adopted son, Shankar. Ramesh hates Shankar & abuses him. Years later, Thakur has expired, & the children have grown up, but Ramesh (Pran) still abuses Shankar (Dilip Kumar), who silently bears this as he & Roopa (Waheeda Rehman) are in love. When Ramesh learns about this, he has Shankar beaten & flung off a cliff, & asks Roopa to marry someone else. A few years later, Shankar returns - as the wealthy Raja of Belapur.
