Jeff is an American filmmaker with Azerbaijani origins. His obsession is to make a film documenting the fate of his mother and by extension her country, which was split in two at the Yalta conference, divided between Iran and the USSR. He decides to travel to Azerbaijan, a decision that threatens to end his marriage. He goes, and shoots a film with a young woman called Jayran playing his mother. The two form a powerful bond, and he begins to doubt his return to America.
