Backstage is more flavorful fluff from the star/director combo of Anna Neagle and Herbert Wilcox Neagle. Neagle plays a likeable chorine who hears tenor Arthur Tracy singing on streets. No surprises here: before he left for England, Tracy had gained fame in the US as radio's "Street Singer". Cockney corporal Wally Winton desires promotion so that he can finally receive an inheritance. He dresses up as a priest and goes out one night with Penelope Toop, the vicar's attractive blonde wife. To add to the theme of mistaken identity, there are several priests running around, some real, some fake. One of these, Basher, is discovered by Winton to be an escaped convict, and is placed under arrest. The corporal is then promoted and becomes eligible for his inheritance.

On the English Channel Island of Boonzey there is a small British Navy base serviced by minesweeper HMS Compton. The task of the vessel and its crew is to sweep the surrounding waters for German magnetic mines leftover from WW2. The task is easy since there are no mines in the local waters. Told in flashback, this movie opens with a scene of a seventeen-year-old boy, Francis Andrews (Sir Richard Attenborough), being brutally lashed during a police interrogation, in which the boy thinks back to what placed him in this situation. He betrayed the crew of a smuggling ship whose master, Richard Carlyon, was also his guardian. Some of the smugglers are caught, but Carlyon escapes, and then begins his search for Andrews. Carlyon was quite fond of the boy, but knew him for a coward.
