Gribiche, a young boy whose mother is a war widow, gets adopted by a rich woman. She wants to turn him into a perfect gentleman, but soon he feels unhappy.

Whichever apprentice makes the finest violin shall receive a prize consisting of one gold chain, and the hand in marriage of the Syndic's daughter Giannina. The young hunchback Filippo loves her, and has made a particularly fine violin. This presents some obstacles to Giannina's plans to marry FIlippo's friend Sandro, another apprentice in the contest.
