This point isn't really highlighted in the movie, but if we want to be real, that is what happens. Seven years later, she comes back and surprises him with a seven year old egg headed alien child and she wants him to teach the child how to have emotion, because the alien/human race is emotionally stunted in lieu of all their intellect.
