About two friends working on the railroad tracks. One day Jørgensen doesn't turn up for work and the friend goes to his home to locate him. Everything breathes peace in the old merchant's house. Mads has to go to the station and pick up the merchant Kelbjerg's daughter Ida. She has just passed the high school diploma and comes home to have a much needed summer vacation.
