Hrafnildur, also known as “Hadda Padda”, and her sister Kristrun are spending the summer in scenic Breidabol with Hadda Padda’s fiancé, Ingolf. A pleasant time is had by all, until Kristrun and Ingolf can deny their love no longer and Ingolf breaks up with Hadda Padda. Deeply wounded, she plots her revenge.

Spanning three generations, the film depicts life in Copenhagen from the perspective of the working class. The film portrays the development of the city, the new opportunities arising and the improved living conditions created as the welfare state expands. ‘From darkness towards light’ is Denmark’s first-ever Social Democratic propaganda film, and it was part of the election campaign leading up to the local elections in 1929.

Friends Peder and Oluf are neighbours and meet regularly for a pint and a game of chess. In secret, Oluf casts a roving eye at his friend’s wife, Mette, who is clearly receptive to his charms. But he has no need to look for a wife, he tells Peder, who mocks him for being a bachelor. No, all he needs to do to lure women in is to blow his golden horn. Even Mette will not be able to resist its call! That very evening, the call of the horn resounds through the night.
