Hal Towne is a Los Angeles widower with a bright ten-year-old son to raise (aided by a stern housekeeper). He writes a syndicated column, "All Around Towne," which brings him into contact with numerous competitors for the favors of his publicity-agent girlfriend.

William Harris is an old-time music publisher who made his daughter Pat a partner. Harris hates rock'n'roll and rejects all popular music submitted. His son-in-law, Steve, is more progressive and this leads to many fights between the two men. Sophie is Harris' secretary and Stubby is a song plugger who performs many of the songs submitted to the publisher.

Two young blue-collar carpenters, the married Harry Dickens and the bachelor Arch Fenster (with his 'little black book'), are best friends. Harry longs for the excitement of Fenster's bachelor life - but Harry's wife Kate won't permit it. At work they also find themselves in conflict with their boss Mr. Bannister.
