Nikolai Haitov

The film sends us to the 18th century when Bulgaria was a part of the Ottoman Empire. Four hoodlums break into the house of the shepherd Karaivan, raping and killing his wife in full view of their little girl, Maria. Karaivan decides to take the law into his own hands and raises Maria as a boy, training her to fight so that she can kill in cold blood and help her father avenge her mother's murder.

The beginning of the 20th century. The young cooper Lio is recognized by the cooper guild as a master of his trade, but no one believes in his abilities. Even the local Muslim priest, for whom Lio made his first barrel, doubts its strength because the hoops are made of wood. Lio throws the barrel in the foaming rocky cauldron of the mountain river, wins a bet against the priest and shaves his beard as has been agreed. The action took place in the Rhodope Mountains in the early 20th c. Two young people are in love with each other and want to marry. The girl's father, however, objects to their plans and makes every effort to separate the couple. Without any grounds, he accuses the boy of committing a theft, and the young man is forced to become a fugitive and hide in the mountains. (imdb)

The film traces the vicissitudes of Banko. He has made a bargain to ambush and abduct the pretty Elitza and deliver her to the man who wants to marry her. The kidnapping is a success in the beginning, but the girl, Elitza, reveals a "manly" character. She puts up a stiff resistance. She fights against being taken to the weak-willed, stupid groom, who believes that the money can buy him everything. (imdb)

Having remained alone in his village house, old Gatyo must move in with his son and daughter-in-law in their flat in the city. They receive him with great understanding and sympathy but cannot find the key to his heart. Torn out of his natural environment and left bewilderingly rootless, this good man cannot adapt himself to the urban way of life. He sees the city as a place full of hostile people and inanimate objects. He badly misses the warm human touch of his village. (imdb)

Second adaptation ot Nikolay Haitov's short story "The Goat Horn". The first film is made in 1972. Bulgaria is under the Ottoman Empire. Somewhere, far in the mountains, goatherd Karaivan lives with his wife and little daughter. One day, while he is away, Turks burst into the house and rape the woman before the eyes of the kid. She dies and the girl is shocked into growing dumb. From this moment on, Karaivan is obsessed with the sole thought of taking revenge. (imdb)
