In the ranch of El Soto lives Raymunda and her daughter, Acacia. After she is widowed, Raymunda marries Esteban. What Raymunda does not suspect is that a deep passion has arisen between Acacia and Esteban. The misfortune is that the men who approach Acacia have a tragic end, and because of this, they begin to call her "La Malquerida" ("The Unloved").

Joining a revolutionary movements, Castro is disowned by his father, but Esperanza remains loyally by his side. Later on, Castro's father is killed by outlaws; in seeking vengeance, he sacrifices his own life, while Esperanza carries on his revolutionary work with their young son in tow.

Returning to his home town, seminarist Miguel is forced to trade the robes for a charro costume in order to solve several problems that appear in his way, including the female kind.

García Mata, civil servant, arrives to the village to investigate Cardoza's murder, a candidate to the local presidency, enemy of "cacique" Rosauro Castro.
