Pechorin is deprived of the officer's rank and gets transferred to one of the mountain villages of the Caucasus. He gets bored of the everyday life and starts looking for fun. He promises Azamat to help him steal Kazbich's horse if the former allows Pechorin to marry his sister Bela. Soon Pechorin gets annoyed by Bela's presence. Kazbich, insulted by the theft of his horse kills Bela. Coldblooded Pechorin is hardly moved by this news.

The play begins when beautiful Nina (Makarova) loses a bracelet during a masked ball. Another woman finds it and without revealing who she is gives it to an ardent Calvary officer admirer at the ball. This officer had earlier spend the evening learning how to gamble from Nina's husband Arbenin (Mordvinov). When the young officer shows the bracelet to Arbenin, the husband starts to suspect that he has been betrayed by his wife, Nina. (imdb)

The landowner Palitsyn (Chardynin) long and successfully sues the neighbor. The lawsuit led to the ruin. He died, leaving orphans children — humpback a young boy Vadim (Speransky) and three-year Olga. In order to avoid condemnation, the Palitsyn takes the girl to the pupils. The young man vows to take revenge on the offender and leaves this region. Several years pass. Olga (Goncharova) becomes the beauty and object of desire of the elderly Palitsyn. The boring daily life of the high society of Pyatigorsk in the XIX century is revived by the arrival of Pechorin from St. Petersburg. Pechorin’s love affair with Mary becomes the subject of controversy.

In an adaptation of Mikhail Lermontov's classic 19th century Russian novel "A Hero of Our Time", soldier Pechorin battles with love and fate in the Caucasus.
