For some reason, the elongated figures limned by the highly astigmatic painter El Greco (1541-1614) perfectly suited the grandees of Spain even though they were clearly anything but realistic, and they fascinate even today. The Greek (Cretan, actually) painter's life in Spain could have served as the basis for a fascinating biography, but the makers of this film chose to concentrate on the bad ol' Inquisition and portray the painter as being warned by his girlfriend that he is being watched; as a foreigner, he is suspected of heresy. This is a sad little comedy really worth watching. The story of count Alfredo AKA Didino (little Alfred) and his bloodsucker mother countess Mafalda has a good way to satirize the mother-son relationship in Italy. The main characters are played by Paolo Villaggio and Lila Kedrova, who are perfectly cast to display the grown man who in fact is still a little boy and the domineering matron... by Massimiliano Misturelli (imdb)

Totò meets a little boy whose mother has just died. The little boy is sent out begging by his cruel uncle, but when Totò finds out he gets the uncle imprisoned. The uncle's wife tells the little boy his mother is in hell, so the little boy tries to burn Totò's house so he can join her there.
