Each player in the game of hide and seek plays the game alone in their homes or apartments, but they can communicate with each other via computer and text messaging. Each one of the players must perform a ritual to summon a ghost, and then they must hide from it to experience the thrill of being tracked by a spirit. If the ritual is not performed in a very precise manner, the person is murdered when the ghost finds them.

Machine World is one of the 11 Braneworlds other than our own, which is referred as the Human World, and it is home to giant vehicular beings called Engines who wage a war against the Gaiark who desire to pollute their world. Losing, Gaiark's three Pollution Ministers' escape leaves them on Earth, seeing the Human World as an easier location to create their ideal paradise.
