Galina Ermolaevna, the director of an exemplary kolkhoz, has been a widow for seven years. She is courted by Gordej Voron, the director of a rival kolkhoz. They meet at the regional fair, full of an incredible array of products on sale from the best kolkhozes. Galina lowers her prices, and Gordej is forced to do the same. The story takes place in a Soviet placed in what is now Ukraine. A mechanic arrives in the Soviet, lead by a young independent woman driving tractors and, between many comedy sketches and propaganda mottoes, a love comes to light.

One day, he decides to leave the capital and flee from the woman he loves, Natasha, a rising singing star. Andrei takes refuge in Siberia, his native land. Once there, he gets a job in a sawmill, where he entertains his fellow-workers playing the accordion during leisure hours.
