In an enchanted forest, the princely brothers Michael and Andreas get lost and are transformed, by a mountain spirit who jealously guards his underground treasure, into animals until the unlikely event of sincere love from a human. Furious, she arrives at the celebration and curses the child: on her fifteenth birthday, the child will prick her finger on a spindle and die. In an attempt to prevent the curse from taking effect, the King orders that all spindles in the kingdom be burned.
