In California in 1840, the cross-eyed Viscount of Texmelucan offers a party to receive his son Tin, who returns from Italy where he was studying. The young man turns out to be a coward who fled in terror after refusing to fight in mourning with Captain Gaspar. In his escape, Tin rescues a witch who gives him an ointment that will make him invincible for an hour.
