Ma Lan

A struggling husband, wife and child face further strain when his rural family moves into their cramped urban flat. He loses his job and she becomes pregnant and the relationship between family members deteriorates under financial and social pressure.

Set during the Orphan Island period of Shanghai, the film follows a group of revolutionary patriots-cum-assassins who finally earn the support of the suffering public. 'We're all Chinese,' so they repeatedly chant. (letterboxd)
