The film begins in the first days of November 1918 on the western front. News comes to the soldiers of a revolutionary uprising in Kiel. Young Thälmann, a soldier against his will, would like to join the expanding conflict on the side of his comrades in Hamburg. As the revolution becomes threatened by the betrayal of the Social Democrats and the splintering of the working class, he nevertheless tries unremittingly to unite the workers.

This black and white documentary film presents the post-war political climate of the time through an effective combination of film, text, and music. Marches, demonstrations and conventions are held in various cities by the Social Democrats and the Communist Party in preparation for the upcoming convention of the new Socialist Unity Party.

A young married couple, both actors working in Berlin before the Wall is built, hold diametrically opposed views on politics, art and citizenship.
