Kurt Früh

The old Zürrer has a bakery in the center of Zurich. He has three adult children: businessman Richard is the oldest, followed by Trudi and Heini is the youngest. Heini helps his father in the bakery business, but dreams of a career as a cyclist. His father not only rejects his sporting ambitions, but also his relationship with Gina, the daughter of Italian greengrocer Renzo Pizzani.

This film deals with the War Orphans following WWII at a children's village in the Swiss Alps where over 200 orphans from all parts of Europe are gathered. The subplots involve a romance between two of the teachers, the grim decision of Red Poland to quit the experiment, and the problem of the German children being viewed as symbols of oppression rather than as the same victims as the children from other countries.
