A romantic tale that follows the clandestine relationship between a young Hutsul girl and a wounded, Soviet guerrilla, lost in enemy territory. The film plays out during the German occupation of Western Ukraine and is backgrounded by the complex, political interplay between the various inhabitants, officials, collaborators and invaders in the region.

A biopic of the great Ukrainian poet and cultural icon Taras Shevchenko told through a series of flashbacks. The film, which borrows its title from one of Shevchenko's better known and more controversial works, follows his life from his humble beginnings in serfdom, to his becoming of a house servant for a Russian artistocrat and his blossoming into a great poet and artist in the years that followed.
