Liberty Belles, silent comedy film from 1914 starring Dorothy Gish, Jack Pickford, and Gertrude Bambrick.

In a garish theatrical boardinghouse in New York, orphan Ruth Colby ( Dorothy Gish ), who taught herself to be an actress through a correspondence course, turns for companionship to Jack Martin, the dissolute cast-off son of wealthy philanthropist Mrs. Martin. The two young people fall in love and are married by "the judge," a derelict justice of the peace. Shortly thereafter Ruth leaves on a dreadful theatrical tour. When she returns she finds the boardinghouse closed and Jack gone.

The first time that Jack was threatened with expulsion from college his Aunt Mary was much surprised and decidedly vexed -- mainly at the college. His family were less surprised, viewing the young man through a clearer atmosphere than his Aunt Mary ever had, and knowing that he had barely escaped similar experiences earlier in his career by invariably leaving school the day before the board of inquiry convened.

Iola, the little Indian girl, is held captive by a gang of cutthroats, from whose clutches and abuse she is rescued by Jack Harper, a prospector. She is truly grateful to Jack, for she regards him as something different from the white people she has seen. Jack's sweetheart and her father are parties of a wagon-train headed for this place, and as luck has been against him, he is somewhat gloomy. Iola learns the reason, and promises to help him find gold.

As a foreman on a tunnel project is preparing for work, he suddenly discovers that his superintendent has secretly been seeing the foreman's wife. After a brief confrontation, the angry foreman carries his resentment to the workplace, where the two are part of a crew working on a tunnel under the Hudson River. While working, the foreman finds that he can no longer keep his feelings under control.
