Although incomplete in its current form, 'Tokyo March' stands as a fragment of Kenji Mizoguchi's early work. Mizoguchi's story of love, revelation, and the sometimes-cruel hand of fate gives us an early glimpse at themes that will be returned to in his later works.

The central character here is Toshie (played by Emiko Yagumo, who also starred in a number of early Ozu films), a young woman who works as a secretary-typist, but wears a kimono and is relatively reserved and old-fashioned. She has fallen in love with Shozo Narita (Minoru Takada), a young man she has met through her work. (Roslindale Monogatari)

It is a surprising blend of real and unreal. Everyone in the film seems to come from marvelously rich families -- and lives in very large houses and apartments.
