Yakuza boss Furuya leans more and more on his protege Takao Shoji, though Shoji has become romantically involved with Furuya's mistress, Natsue. As the gang grows more jealous of the favoritism Furuya shows Shoji, they decide to reveal Shoji's relationship with Natsue. Mikami is posted as a staff officer at a base on an island in the Pacific. Kawakami and Murakami later joins him as the base squardron is reinforced. May Kawaguchi is a famous Japanese fashion designer. Returning to Tokyo from her home in New York, she travels incognito with a tour group, in hopes of having a quiet vacation without being noticed. But she is spotted and the press has a field-day with the returning celebrity. Her hopes of rest shattered, she agrees to put on a large-scale fashion show.

Masako Toyoda writes an essay. Following the instructions of her teacher, she improves it, and eventually one of her compositions is published in a magazine. However, in her effort to be honest, the article contains a slighting remark about the most powerful man in the neighborhood. Her father, a poor tinsmith, loses jobs, his bicycle is stolen, and the family has nothing to eat.

Story is based on the popular novel of the same name. It follows the title character as he grows from a reckless and rambunctious youth into a respected teacher.

Ryoma Sakamoto's distress at Teradaya, the assassination of Ryoma and Shintaro Nakaoka, the love between Shinsengumi Kano and Hinagiku, and the Ikedaya incident are depicted using musical techniques. The gag that Kondo is strong when he puts on a high clog is impressive.
