Leandro, a unemployed construction worker, and his friend Tocho try to rob a tobacco shop in the Madrid neighborhood of Vallecas, but Mrs. Justa, the tobacconist, prevents it by alerting the neighbors who notify the police. Meanwhile, inside the tobacco shop, the confrontation between the two friends and their 'hostages', the tobacconist and her niece, is relaxing and an incipient sympathy arises between them.

Paco, son of the commander of the Civil Guard Evaristo Torrecuadrada, has been involved in Bilbao in the murder of a couple of heroin traffickers. When the press begins to take an interest in the case, the efforts of his father to take him apart from drugs and hide the evidence of the crime are useless. Paco will be arrested, tried and imprisoned in the Madrid prison of Carabanchel, where he will experience first hand the rigors of the penitentiary system.
