In late Joseon period, Yak-jeon, a scholar and bureaucrat, is exiled to the remote island Heuksando. In the island, he becomes engrossed by fish and decides to write a book on it. He asks a young fisherman Chang-dae for help with the book, while Yak-jeon helps him with reading books in return. However, the relationship between them starts breaking up when Yak-jeon realizes Chang-dae wants to study in order to be successful by becoming a bureaucrat.
