Before the downfall of the Czar, Anuita sings to incite the people to revolt, eluding Prince Voloyda. Her fellow conspirator, Konstantin, watches her covetously, though he is pledged to Natasha. They overthrow the Czar, but Anuita, disgusted with Konstantin's brutality, goes to her village where she meets the prince and they fall in love.
