It's 1945, and the princess Ulrike von Brandenburg is on the run to the west, with an old uncle and two court ladies, to Bavaria, where the von Brandenburgs still own a castle. Along the way they get under fire from a low-flying aircraft and lose most of their luggage in a river, together with the case with the crown jewels.

Once again, Hans Neumeister, a widowed man with four spirited children, is looking for a new maid. He advertises the position in the local paper. His children have other ideas. They don't want yet another maid, they want a woman who will stay with the family for good. And to find her, they put their own ad in the paper. When the lady they have selected from among the replies comes to the house, their father mistakes her for the new maid.

A revue star escapes her exhausting theatre life. By train she travels to the mountains. Alone in the wilderness and dressed only in her fur coat, she is rescued by two engineers.

It portrays the lives of the pianist Clara Schumann and her composer husband Robert Schumann. It was a propaganda film of the German Nazism.

A group of people gathers back in the post-war ruins of a luxurious Munich hotel they inhabited at one point or another years before; each trying to cope with the tragic consequences of the war and their own actions.
