When the stranger Martin Poulsen arrives at a cosy little fishing village as the heir to one of the boats and a house in the harbour - and unwilling to sell - it comes as an inconvenient obstacle in the plans of the local fisherman baddie.

Poul Løwe is young, charming and rich - and his secretary Gretel is the same, except for the rich - and none of them are mutual blind to each other's characteristics, making it difficult for them to concentrate on the typewriter. There's just one difficult and embarrassing problem: Poul is married!

The action takes place in Vienna in 1826. We meet the composer Franz Schubert and some of his artist friends, including his namesake and faithful friend of many years, the frivolous baron Franz von Schober. The friends, who represent poetry, music and painting, live a dissolute bohemian life that stands in stark contrast to the Vienna Citizens nice life in this period, known as Biedermeier. The artists and the bourgeoisie meet, both parties need each other, and it becomes both a double wedding

The old bastard landlord Martin Kaas, whose only child, Louise, ran away 15 years earlier with an Italian artist, dies with her husband in a plane crash. Pastor Pripp sends the message to him, telling Martin Kas that he has a grandson. The now orphan boy Martin arrives in Denmark. Torben has always believed that he was the only heir and now sees his chances threatened, so he does everything to bring the boy into trouble with the grandfather.

On the great beautiful estate Næsbygård resides the widower and landlord Martin Kaas. His only grandson 17-year-old Martin has returned from Italy, where his parents were killed in a plane crash. He is the only enemy of the great beautiful estate. Martin and his grandfather feel strongly connected to each other. The boy is sent to the landlord's cousin in Texas to learn about cattle breeding on his large cattle farm. The landlord's good friend Pastor Pripp comforts him in his loneliness.

Cirkus Karla has been on tour 'in Germany and is now returning home to Denmark. The clown Laust (Peter Malberg) has gathered a young forerunner (Poul Reichhardt) on the road. He can remember nothing but his own name, but he sees a newspaper front page where Kurt is standing and so he calls for it. It turns out that Kurt is an excellent flute player, so together they form a clown number that will be a great success.

Vienna, 1946. Dr. Vedel takes in Leni Rosner, a young survivor from a concentration camp. He sends her to Denmark where she is welcome by the Lassen family. Leni finds a new balance among them, especially in the company of Hugo, the son. The latter, who is physically handicapped and teaches her Danish, also finds comfort by Leni, who cheers him up when morale is too low. As for Edith, Hugo's sister, she is in love with Jorgen Vedel but she asks him to give up working for the Red Cross.

The people depicted in the film have grown up in the Jutland soil and are characterized by its toughness, centuries of struggle with the fabled heath, which in its lonely majesty seems to brood over great secrets that it will most reluctantly let go of.
