This is an earlier, much less successful version of the _Feuerzangenbowle_ , but the story is basically the same: The famous writer Hans Pfeiffer has problems in directing his latest play about a high-school class. He's told the reason is that he never attended a regular school, so he decides to swap roles with his younger brother Erich, who's a never-graduating, always kidding senior in a small-town high-school. This is a deft satire by Axel von Ambesser that undercuts the adage that a soldier must always obey orders, no matter what. At the heart of the story is Schwejk (Heinz Ruhmann), a canine salesman who is drafted into the army during World War I. The setting is Bohemia when it was under the sway of a combined Austro-Hungarian rule. Romantic involvement with two young British female travelers ensues, but the plot deepens into the disappearance of rare Mauritius postage stamps which they undertake to recover, in their role as Holmes and Watson. Leopold Pichler (Pallenberg) is a very orderly and trustworthy chief cashier who is asked by his boss to get a large sum of money from the bank which the boss urgently needs on a trip to Vienna. Due to some circumstances, getting the money takes a little longer than expected and the director leaves for Vienna without it. But Pichler sees himself as a reliable man, and so he and his assistant Wittek (Rühmann) follow the director to Vienna with the money kept in a bag.

Family Brandt has lost its fortune in oil speculation, and they have great debts at the local bank. This one is threatened with its own crash due to lack of money. The only hope is Brandt's uncle Thomas Hoffman, an American millionaire, who is coming for a visit. Bank Accountant Schmidt uses his own money to welcome him properly, presenting himself as Brandt's daughter's fiance, but Hoffmann never was a millionaire, in fact he still owns the city of Chicago about $100 for medical treatment. He hears the song, he wanted to hear, and so does Inge.

In 1948 Germany, tailor Anton and soldier Bosty switch identities during Carnival festivities, leading to mistaken arrests and comical misunderstandings. Anton's apparent death complicates matters until a real relative arrives, resolving the confusion.
