Vampire Count Orlok expresses interest in a new residence and real estate agent Hutter's wife.

Two French spies, Baron d'Aubigny and Clemence de Montignon, blackmail German engineer Günther Ellinghaus with his gambling debts into handing over his construction plans for the new Ikarus engine. He flees to New York and works as a waiter. When World War I breaks, he signs on as a fireman on a Dutch ship and returns to Europe. He becomes a fighter pilot in Germany and faces the former spies as his enemies. After an emergency landing he is taken into their headquarters.

James Mistoll, one of the owners of a factory working on a process to turn copper ore into radium, falls from a window in the fourth floor and is dead. But it soon transpires that this was no accident, but murder. A case for the famous detective Max Landa, who begins to investigate the case. He sends his assistant Barnes into the company and soon the number of suspects multiplies.

Gypsy Lola Montez is told by an old woman that she will marry a king. This is used to poison the throne-pretendent of Spain, giving the crown to Carlos, but this fails. Lola is arrested, but able to convince the local governor of her innocence. Together they go to Venice, the situation in Spain is becoming too dangerous for him. In Venice, she meets a student from Munich and falls in love with him, but her mentor orders her to follow him to Paris, soon involved with future ruler, Napoleon III.
