After killing a man in a duel José escapes to Castille and enlists in the army, where he meets Carmen, an enchanting gypsy girl.

A house in Paris happens to have two families living there with the same last name. In one apartment lives opera singer Gambetta Duval with his two daughters, Jeanne and Nita. In the second apartment lives old lady Duval with her grandchild Philippa and an her lodger, the physician Leon Monnier. Jeanne is secretly in love with Dr. Monnier who is secretly in love with Nita, who is secretly having an affair with the great playwright Armand de Marny.

"Opfer Des Hasses" depicts how the family of Herr Goldschmidt ( Herr Gyula Szöreghy ) a Jewish Russian manufacturer, suffered ruin and murder as victims of a pogrom during the Russian Revolution. Herr Goldschmidt manages to save two of his grandchildren and they flee to Vienna where the Jewish welfare organization helps immigrants in an orphanage in Baden. Years later Herr Goldschmidt tells the whole sad story (in flashback ) to a visitor.
