Francesco, nicknamed 'Toscano', is a very good pool player but he never wins when he plays for money. He meets Chiara, a saxophone player, on a late night bus by swapping his case containing the cue with her one, containing the sax. The two fall in love, but in the meantime Francesco loses a big amount of money playing versus 'Scuro', the long-time Italian champion. His only chance to pay the debt is to win the Italian Championships.

Renzo Calabrese, a dentist, falls in love with the restless feminist Margherita, with whom he has a very turbulent relationship because of her emancipation. Lorenzo is a disc-jockey who lives in Genoa, in a loft near the port; he conducts a night radio program for the radio station Radio Strega, keeping company, with his words and sentences, to those who suffer from insomnia or work at night. His philosophy of life, as well as that of his goliardic friends (a taxi driver and a pianist) and his father (manager of a cinema where pornographic films are broadcast), is to fight monotony, often even breaking the rules and some female hearts.

Romeo Casamonica gets out of prison after serving a five-year sentence for armed robbery. Outside there is no one waiting for him. Realizing that he no longer has ties and that even the environment in which he lived has changed a lot, his only goal becomes to track down his six-year-old son Lorenzo, practically never known, the result of a brief relationship with a foreign woman who has returned home, abandoning him.
