A TV adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel. George and Lenny travel through the Depression-era west working at odd jobs, hoping to make enough money to buy their own farm. George must always watch over his mentally retarded friend, and keep him out of danger, both to himself and to others. While detective Lance is recouperating in a hospital due to mental stress from work, the head doctor and his patient in room 18 are murdered and $100,000 worth of radium goes missing. With the help of his former sweetheart (played by Ann Sheridan, who also happens to be a nurse in the ward), it is up to Lance to stop the string of murders and recover the missing radium.

Film star Ted Crosley, fed up with movie life, quits pictures to enroll in Midland College, much to the horror of his manager Sam Lewis and his stooge-friend Willie Gumbatz. Ted wishes to enroll in school under an assumed name but Sam, hoping to nip his school plans in the bud, tips off the press and school. Taking over from Edward Arnold as crabby, corpulent consulting detective Nero Wolfe is Walter Connolly, who despite his physical resemblance to the Stout original is not all that well suited for the role.
