Yukon Ed has asked saloon owner Ruby McGraw to marry him several times, and has been turned down each time. However, she falls for Jack Sturgess, a no-account who has seduced and abandoned a poor young girl and is escaping from his father's anger. She takes up with Jack to Ed's dismay, and soon the thing that Ed feared would happen does happen.

Jim Carson, a young Tennessee mountaineer, and Millie James, a mountain girl, are worried over the condition of Jim's mother. Millie nurses her tenderly. Jim's worry is increased by a note which he has received from John Calhoun, a miserly landowner, stating that, unless he pays the overdue rent on the shack which they occupy, that Jim will be evicted. Realizing that terrible shock would be dangerous to his mother, Jim goes out and attempts to borrow the money. He meets with no success.

The putative program sponsor wants to meet Dagmar to determine if her character is suitable to market his product, but his efforts are hindered by Dagmar's father and her cousin who insists on acting as her agent.

A 14-year-old boy lies about his age and enlists in the United State Marine Corps without his family's consent or knowledge. He is sent into battle in the Pacific war-zone, decorated, and spotted in a newsreel by his family. The family asks the War Department to discharge him and send him home. A complicated period of adjustment follows for both the boy, who is no longer a boy even at age 15, and his family.

Buddy Flower, a financial advisor, lives with his maiden aunts Iris and Violet who adore him but are a little eccentric. They keep him busy getting them out of scrapes, extricating himself from their matchmaking and other chaotic occurrences.

Prof. Andrew Gentling, in Los Angeles to help found a new college, is inveigled by old flame Catherine Sykes into a midnight drive. Next day Catherine is missing, believed killed; friend Martha convinces Andrew that he's a prime suspect and should investigate before he's arrested.
