Upon suddenly losing his fortune, the young Count Berner sets out for New York to try his luck there. With his winning nature and great drive, he quickly advances from being a stevedore to becoming a chauffeur for a well-known millionaire. But when he embarks on a relationship with the millionaire’s daughter Anny, he gets into trouble: another suitor of hers gets jealous and will stop at nothing to get Berner out of the way.

He is in love with, and is beloved by Edna, the only daughter of Miller, the ship owner, and the latter favors the match because of the manliness of the young officer. It is partially on this account that Willie, as he is called by his shipmates, receives his commission as second officer.

Prince Heinrich and Herbert Prince, a journalist, are very similar in build and facial resemblance, although neither is aware of the fact. Therein lies the secret of the memorable day the journalist enjoyed. Prince Heinrich, bored over billiards in the officer's quarters of his regiment, discards the game to take a brief nap, the journalist was involuntarily (at first) feted in his stead. Herbert has been granted leave of absence, and, before departing from his duties, persuades his friend.

Consul Descombes is a married man, but yearns for long nights with female companionship in Paris. As fate would have it, one day he receives a letter from a former acquaintance named Lulu, who wants to take him to Paris. Descombes leaves under the pretence of going on a business trip. Every day is life and death for the circus performers of the big city. Tightrope dancer Ulla lives and works in a circus with her family. In the midst of Ulla’s grief, the lion tamer proves to be a true predator, eyeing up an easy prey. Ulla quickly faces bigger worries, as the circus director forces her to walk on a tightrope directly over the lion tamer’s ferocious lions.

Grev Dahlborgs Hemmelighed (1914) - Short Film
These recordings were part of Valdemar Psilander’s live performance at the Royal Orfeum in Budapest, in February and March 1914. Psilander financed the show himself, and it was a mixture of film and theatre under the title Count Dahlborg’s Secret. The film footage, which unfortunately hasn’t been preserved in its entirety, opened the performance, after which Psilander himself rode onto the stage and continued the action.
