The story of the film is based on Václav Kaplický's book Kladivo na ?arod?jnice (1963), a novel about witch trials in Northern Moravia during the 1670s. The black-and-white allegorical film, full of symbols, follows the events of the trial of the priest Kryštof Lautner. Good-looking Edita arrives at a chemical factory in the town of Ústí nad Labem together with her young assistant Nada. She is hoping that her ex-husband, outstanding practical chemical engineer Vik Panc, will help her conduct an experiment to validate her proposed theoretical method of isolating cholesterol from lanolin. Vik's room mate from his hostel Bréta is thrilled as he will finally meet the mysterious and fascinating Edita about whom he has learned so much from Vik.

Radio announcer Petrícek reads the evening news in a studio. Viki, the female editor of a woman's program, is annoyed by the stereotypical information he provides as well as by the speaker's melodious voice and his heart-felt performance. Then she gets an idea for a prank. She calls the speaker from the neighboring room on the phone and pretends to be an unhappily married woman who draws all her strength to live from Petrícek's voice.
