The Blue monk is a feature about cheerful, lonely and hungry-for-love characters in a pub. We follow the people, all of whom are thirsting for beer and human contact. The pub is an oasis, a haven, where the waitresses, listen to the regulars' dream and problems, risking becoming part of both and that can have catastrophic consequences.

Friend and devotee of Fassbinder from 1969 to the end, Thomson runs through the director's career with a psychoanalytic bent, supported by an unreleased interview he shot in 1978 when the great man was particularly exhausted and loose-lipped. (variety.com)
